John Ashcroft has been nominated by President- Elect George W. Bush for the office of Attorney General. DRCNet, as a nonpartisan organization devoted strictly to drug policy reform, is opposing the Ashcroft nomination because of his record as one of the most hawkish drug warriors supporting some of the most extreme drug war legislation during his tenure in the Senate. Here's the e-mail I sent to John McCain:

I've seen first hand what "tough love" can do when it comes to drugs. My own uncle slowly died before my eyes because his parents kept sending him to prevention programs, giving him MORE mind altering drugs and even locking him up in mental institutions. They always said ANYTHING is better than drugs. Well, they got their wish. He finally chose death.

PLEASE do everything you can to stop John Ashcroft and people with his point of view from ruining this country even more. Prevention and "controlled" distribution under medical and NOT political supervision is the way to fight and defeat this evil "drug war." Please stop sacrificing your children by creating public paranoia and political sound bytes in order to fund and continue a miserably failed social mennace. PLEASE HELP. Reach inside you for your humanity and understanding and stop this madness. Everytime you place a person in jail for a none violent drug violation you are ruining a potentially productive life and CREATING a new criminal. Please make calm and logical choices. The fait of all of us is affected by your dicisions. Changing your attitude towards the drug war is not defeat. It is victory... for all of us.
